I work very hard to develop a strong, comfortable and trusting bond between my clients and myself. I am well aware that for many people "therapy" is second only to root canal. When I entered this field of study my professors told me that if you want to become a good therapist, "get into therapy yourself and see what it feels like to be on that side of the couch before you sit on this side." This was a very wise and helpful suggestion, both personally and professionally. Body image issues are very common for many people. Men are also victims of this issue. Madison Avenue spends billions of dollars trying to keep us feeling inadequate about our bodies and our lives (unless of course we purchase their products from perfumes to underwear). Then it is implied that we become transformed into one of those beautiful people, at least for a "perceived moment." As I tell my clients, we all come from dysfunctional families. The only difference between families is the degree of dysfunction. |
