I Can Help, Call Me: (516) 869-1832This is not meant to be judgmental but rather a statement of fact based on my years of experience as a psychotherapist. Infidelity is a lose-lose situation for all parties. No matter how bad your relationship is there is never any good reason to have an affair. WHY? You may ask. Aside from the obvious reasons of the pain and suffering it causes to everyone around you, your (partner, children, and family members). It is also harmful to you. It creates guilt and self loathing, maybe not at first, but at some point and it will last for a life time. And as with many things in life an affair is easier to get into then out of.

Your guilt can then develop into other negative, self sabotaging behaviors that will impact every aspect of your life. In exploring affairs with my clients, I and they come to see that it is many times a form of acting out. These clients many times are subconsciously trying to recreate their childhood experiences, realizing that their parents have done the same.

We often marry what we know. There are, as I've stated earlier, exceptions to every rule. Exception or not there are usually deep seeded (negative) reasons for acting out, far too many to list.

The bottom line is that infidelity very seldom ever turns out well or as you planned. And if you wind up marrying that individual, often times the old saying will replay in you head for the remainder of that relationship, “Once a cheater always a cheater”.

I Can Help, Call Me: (516) 869-1832It is far healthier to explore your current relationship and try to salvage it (if you are inclined to do so), or end it. Then spending time alone to get to know and understand yourself, before beginning a new one is always advisable.
